Ten Commandments of Social Media

Ten Commandments of Social Media

These 10 Commandments of Social Media are just brilliant.

Thou Shalt Not Be a Narcissist
Thou Shalt Listen to What Others Are Saying
Thou Shalt Not Spam
Thou Shalt Say Something of Substance
Thou Shalt Not Abuse Thy Neighbour
Thou Shalt Give Credit Where Credit is Due
Thou Shalt Learn How to Spell (or at least use a spell checker)
Thou Shalt Use Real Words
Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness
Thou Shalt Not Be a Friend Whore

Ode to Jubelale

Oh Deschutes, how do I love thee?
In so many ways...
IPA, Black Butte, Green Lake and that seasonal
chocolate espresso one we had in Bend last June...
but I especially enjoy Jubelale.
The label is cool and has the word "festive" which
makes me think of Festivus and it makes me happy.
It tastes pretty darn good too,
A little dark, like it is outside,
A little hoppy, like a winter chill,
Goes down easy and one is enough.
Yes, Deshutes, you have done it again,
Given me another reason to enjoy the season!

Danish Humor

I wish I were this witty! I am sick of hearing about Tiger Woods. Did anybody really think he was different than any other rich guy!?!? They just can't keep it in their pants. They have to share the wealth. I'm not surprised and I wish Nike would drop him, but they won't.

Thanksgiving

There are so many things to be thankful for, but in my Scandinavian way, I can't help but think of all the people who have so little in this world. I don't want to be a downer, so I'll stop and just enjoy the moment.

The moment...slept well last night. Almost everyone is healthy again. We will get together with friends and my friend is good enough to host us all. We have jobs, decent paying job. True, bonus would be nice, but doubtful this year. Yes, I have some bratty kids this year, but you'd be bratty too if you had their home-life.

OK, this is when I miss my extended family and I think, "What the hell am I doing out here is OREGON?" Do I really live in OREGON? It's so far from everyone!!! But it is reality. THIS IS IT. We live in Oregon, we really like it, and our needs are met. And hey, some random survey said this is the #1 place to raise a family. If you like suburbia. Which I do and don't. Conflicted on that.

Back to THE MOMENT. I will say some prayers for those who don't have what they need.
I will enjoy my family and friends. I will be nice, especially to those closest to me.

Fructose is EVIL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

I had time during our ride to Seattle to watch this and it blew me away! I have always believed that input = output when it comes to body weight/eating. IT'S NOT TRUE! Fructose changes everything. I heard something similar on NPR one time, but after watching this talk, I understand the chemistry.

Basically...fruit juice and anything with high fructose corn syrup is evil...it goes almost directly to fat. The key is to avoid fruit juice, corn syrup and eat a lot more fiber. He also talks about ethanol, another poison.

Bottom line fruit juice/fructose corn syrup = poison
(unless you are an elite athlete, of course)

Parenting based on the Dog Whisperer...I love it! But really, setting limits and asserting power!?!! Hey, if it's good enough for dogs, it's good enough for me. Maybe he could branch into classroom management. Believe you me, the pack mentality is in play in middle school.

Book Review: A Most Wanted Man by John Le Carre

Dave recommended the book. I often recommend books to him that he never reads, so I felt like I had to read his book, just to prove a point. Yes, the joys of marriage!

It was actually pretty good, but I think it was more of a guys book. It had a lot of dialogue and I really wasn't always sure of what was going on. Kind of like those spy movies where you always feel like you're missing something important.

What it really deals with is the racial profiling of Muslims in the post-911 world. It is set in Hamburg, where many of the 911 terrorists were based. Le Carre gives a mostly balanced view of the intelligence and Muslim communities, however it is clear whose side he is on. The lenses we choose to look through create very different pictures of what we see.

I would give this book three stars. Sometimes it is nice to read a book that lasts a few nights and puts me to sleep instead of keeping me up.

First Post...Stupidity Does Not Go Away With Age

Let's just start this off with, "Really, is this it?" But really, it is darn good. Did anyone else read Kristof's Sunday piece -
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/15/opinion/15kristof.html - about the African woman who overcame ridiculous obstacles to reach her dream? If you are feeling sorry for yourself, like I am right now, read it!

I just read it for the second time and feel better, way better.

It seems totally self-indulgent to now tell you about my petty problems, but some sick part of my feels compelled to share:

What possesses people to do stupid things? Or as we say to students, "Make bad choices." Mine usually only hurt myself luckily. Though my three children are certainly evidence of natural consequences that go way beyond myself (sorry kids!). So this time I decided to run after dark. It gets dark so darn early, doesn't it? As I ran towards the Nike campus I wanted to avoid the street so I cut though a field. Dark, night...hmmmm...About the second step my foot found a hole and I landed on my bad ankle (yes, the one that was broken for two years and I had surgery on two years ago).

Presently, I am sitting on my couch, foot propped up, waiting for the ibuprofen to kick in and yes, feeling sorry for myself. Why? Because it hurts and I am a wimp.

I just read about a woman who faced hurdles I can't even imagine and I just remembered a conversation I overhead at the school where I teach. A girl was explaining she had on pajamas because her "caseworker" does not allow her to wear skinny jeans and she has no other pants. No (decent) parents and no decent clothes. WTF is happening to our children!!?!!? They are not being "raised". If my school is the best it gets for these kids, god help them. God help us...Who is going to fund our Social Security?

Well, as Maya Angelou said in an email I received today (TY Jen O)..."Even though I have pains, I don't have to be a pain." When I read that earlier, I had no idea I was gong to have to live it!
